“So, how high do you want it?” Brandon climbed up the ladder and unclipped the tape measure from his belt.

“Halfway between the top of the window and the ceiling.” Lucy adjusted the position of one of the new leather chairs on the rug she’d helped Ashley select this morning.

Brandon measured the space and made a few light marks on the wall, then went to work with drill, screws and wall anchors to hang the brackets for the curtain rod. “You sure we need the anchors?”

“They’re nine-foot panels.” Lucy fingered the crimson toile she’d been working on all afternoon and evening. “They’re fairly heavy.”

“All right, then.” He twisted screws into place as she threaded the rod through the clip rings on the panel. “And this short little rod is going to work?”

“It’s just to hold the panel for decoration.” Lucy climbed carefully up a few rungs of the ladder to hand the rod off to him. “To get a rod that spanned the whole width of the windows in here, we’d need to have it custom made. And Ashley didn’t really want curtains that closed.”

“I see.” Brandon set the rod into the brackets, tightened the screws against the rod, and then climbed down and pulled the ladder to the other side of the windows.

Lucy arranged the folds of the panel until they hung attractively, then stood back to inspect their work. The toile helped to neutralize the masculinity of the leather armchairs, cowhide ottoman, and mounted longhorns, which Ashley decided would hang above the television when it arrived.

“So, explain this deal you struck with my sister.” Brandon climbed back up the ladder and started on the next set of brackets.

“She offered to comp my stay here in exchange for my help with this room. Especially for making the curtains.”

“You made these?” He glanced down at her.

She nodded.

“At your store?”

“No. Actually, I made them in the attic. In your mother’s sewing room. It’s a great space. She must have been quite a seamstress.”

He glanced back at the panel, a short, surprised grunt escaping. “She was. I used to spend hours up there with her while Dad was out working cows. She’d sew and I’d read. Until I got old enough that Dad thought I should be spending my free time out with him. I didn’t realize all that stuff up there would be any good after all these years.”

Lucy shrugged again. “Well, it was no big deal to tune up the machine a little. And the curtains were just simple straight seams. I kind of feel like I got the better end of the deal and I should offer to do some more work around here.”

“You could help with the fence.” He grinned and turned back to hanging the brackets.

“I think I’ll leave that to you.” She threaded the next rod through the curtain rings. “I’m making some throw pillows for these chairs tomorrow.”

“So, you’ll be staying another day?”

“As long as you’re not getting tired of me being around.” She fingered the
